Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu Wednesday inaugurated the Shimla Winter Carnival at the historic Ridge, marking the beginning of a series of cultural and tourism-focused events aimed at promoting the state as a prime winter destination. The carnival is being organised by the Shimla Municipal Corporation and is themed around a ‘Drug-Free Himachal’.

The CM also flagged off a colourful cultural parade featuring folk troupes from all districts of Himachal Pradesh, showcasing the state’s rich cultural diversity. He later visited a painting exhibition at the Gaiety Theatre, witnessed the Maha Nati performance, and attended the Home Guards Inter-Battalion Band Competition near the Town Hall.

Congratulating the organisers, Sukhu extended his best wishes for the successful conduct of the carnival. Welcoming tourists, he said Himachal Pradesh’s serene and pollution-free environment offers not only recreation and peace but also contributes to better health.

Interacting with visitors, the CM enquired about their experiences and assured them of a safe and hassle-free stay in the state.

Highlighting tourism initiatives, Sukhu said the state’s scenic beauty and picturesque valleys attract crores of tourists every year. He added that while the government is strengthening basic infrastructure to boost tourism, focused efforts are also underway to promote Himachal Pradesh’s cultural heritage. Similar winter carnival celebrations are also being organised in Dharamshala, he said.

Emphasising eco-tourism, he said a revised Eco-Tourism Policy has been notified. Under the policy, 11 eco-tourism sites have already been allotted, while the allotment of 27 more sites is in the final stage. Between 2023 and November 2025, eco-tourism activities generated nearly ₹6 crore.

To promote home-stays, Sukhu said an interest subsidy scheme has been launched and an online registration portal introduced. He added that the Tourism Investment Promotion Council has also been constituted to attract investment in the tourism sector.
Several ministers, legislators, senior officials and civic body representatives were present on the occasion.
