Bareily resident Yashpal, who was lodged in Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore,Pakistan, for around three years, returned to India Tuesday evening. He was to be released on May 30 but it took around a month more for Pakistan to complete the legal formalities before deporting him to India.

It was in Kot Lakhpat Jail that Sarabjit Singh was lodged. Singh was attacked and killed by a fellow prisoner in April .

On Tuesday evening,Yashpal (30),along with six others, including a woman from Maharashtra, was brought to Wagah border in Amritsar by Pakistan authorities and handed over to Indian authorities.

After completion of formalities, including a medical check-up,the Indian authorities handed Yashpal to his father Babu Ram who had gone to Wagah with four other residents of Bareilly, including social activist Dr Pradeep Kumar. Babu Ram said they are on way home and hopefully would reach by evening.

Its Gods gift that my son is with us. We had almost lost hope of seeing him again after getting to know he was in Pakistan jail, said Babu Ram,a labourer.

He,however, said that they are depressed with the condition of his son who seems mentally unstable. We suspect he reached this condition following torture by Pakistani officials. He is not responding to our query, Babu Ram said.
