Sunny Shah lies on a shabby bed at the Suri Municipal Hospital, his legs fractured and groaning in pain. But the 21-year-old clings on to hope: someone told him his mother Renu,48,and three other relatives who were travelling with him in the general compartment of the Vananchal Express are missing.
Sunny thinks they are all alive. His father Sarban Shah,53,knows they are not.
Sitting outside the hospital morgue,Sarban says,I dont know how I will tell the truth to my son. He thinks they are still missing.
Sunny was returning to hometown Asansol with his mother and relatives from Bhagalpur, where they had gone to look for a match for his cousin. His cousin Shakuntala,23,aunt Sangeeta,55,and uncle Balram,60,along with his mother died in the crash.
If Sunny was still hoping his mother was alive, the wait for news of their relatives has brought despair with each passing hour to others like Morshed Shaikh,Budho Devi and Sarita Marandi.
My elder brother Simon Tudu and younger brother Mangal Marandi were traveling with me to Ranchi to get me admitted in college. They are missing. Their names do not figure in any list, and nobody has informed my father also. I am stranded here, said Sarita Marandi,19,from Sahebganj in Jharkhand. She is admitted in the Siuri Sadar Hospital with serious back and leg injuries.
Morsheds brother Manirul Shaikh,21,and Budhos daughter Bindu,12,sister Meera and brother-in-law Dwarki Das figure in the list of missing passengers. Budho was travelling from Kehelgaon to Ranchi for her daughters treatment. My husband doesnt have a mobile phone. I dont know how he will find out about me.
Of the 94 patients admitted in Siuri Hospital, eight were unidentified and three of them have died.
