Idar in Gujarat countrys hottest at 48.5 degrees
NEW DELHI: The country remained in the grip of scorching heat with temperatures on Friday crossing the 45-degree mark at several places in north India while Idar in Gujarat was the hottest in the country at 48.5 degree Celsius. Rajasthan experienced near unbearable heat with Barmer sizzling at 48 degrees,the seasons highest,and the temperature crossing 45-degree mark at places like Jaisalmer,Jodhpur,Bikaner and Churu.
Jaish-Umar banner at Mirwaiz rally
SRINAGAR: Among banners waved at a rally of Mirwaiz Umer Farooq here on Friday,one had the names of militant outfits Jaish-e-Muhammad and Al-Umar Mujahideen emblazoned on it. Leaders of both the outfits,Masood Azhar and Mushtaq Zargar,were released in exchange for the hijacked Indian Airlines plane IC-814. When contacted,Mirwaiz said he didnt know who waved this banner.
Gulf to have its first gurdwara in Dubai
AMRITSAR: The first gurdwara in the UAE,the Guru Nanak Durbar,will open in Dubai within a month. Built at a cost of 20 million,the ultra-modern gurdwara is a rare piece of architectural design. It took two years for Dubai-based architectural firms Holford Associates and Paul Bishop Design Associates to give shape to the three-storyed structure built over 12,5000 sq ft with a basement,a langar community kitchen and assembly halls.
Huge cache of explosives seized
SASARAM: In a huge haul on Friday,the police seized 40 quintals of explosives and 300 detonators and arrested two persons in Rohtas district,Bihar. The police suspect the explosives were to be supplied to Maoists. Acting on a tip-off,the police searched the Amartalab hill area and seized the explosives. While Bablu Kumar Rai and Pintu Kumar have been arrested,the police are still on the lookout for three more persons in this connection.
Woman jumps into well with two kids
NASHIK: A 28-year-old tribal woman jumped into a well along with her two children at Mothe-Udepur village in Nandurbar district on Thursday evening. The bodies of Amisha Darasingh Padvi,her daughter Megha 3 and son Himanshu 1 were fished out on Friday morning. The police are investigating the reasons behind Amishas step.
Bangalore: Kites screening stopped
BANGALORE: Screening of the Hrithik Roshan-starrer Kites was stopped in Bangalore on Friday,following protests by members of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce. The films distributors violated KFCC norms by releasing the movie in 46 theatres in south Karnataka,instead of the stipulated 21 theatres. About 60 KFCC members along with president Basant Kumar Patil have been taken into custody.
