Law Minister H R Bhardwaj has changed his stand on initiating impeachment proceedings against Calcutta High Court judge Justice Soumitra Sen,as recommended by the Chief Justice of India. Explaining the delay recently,Bhardwaj argued that in order to start the process, the Government needed signatures of at least 50 Lok Sabha or 100 Rajya Sabha MPs. This was a departure from his stance taken immediately after the CJIs recommendation became public last September. Bhardwaj had then gone on record stating that since the motion for Sens impeachment would be a government motion, the signatures wouldnt be required.
