Two hurt as ULFA rebels open fire

Two persons, including a police constable, were injured when suspected ULFA militants opened fire at a hired police vehicle in trouble-torn Tinsukia district on Sunday.

Two persons, including a police constable, were injured when suspected ULFA militants opened fire at a hired police vehicle in trouble-torn Tinsukia district on Sunday.

Tinsukia superintendent of police Prasanta Bhuyan said some youths opened fire at a private Tata 407 vehicle, hired by the police for patrolling duty, at around 4:30 pm at a weekly haat in Tongona village under Kakopathar police station.

8220;The injuries are minor. While the police constable hurt his palm in the incident, a bihari vendor received a bullet injury on one of his heels,8221; Bhuyan said.

Earlier on Saturday, security forces had shot dead an ULFA militant at a village under Kakopathar police station.

The slain militant, who was identified as Binod Chetia, is said to have had a hand in the recent attack on migrants from Bihar in the district.
