
It was an alleged loot attempt by three youths that killed Mazhar Naeem, a second year BSc student at Aligarh Muslim University, police claimed on Sunday.
Aligarh police, which was investigating the case with the Special Task Force, said the motorcycle-borne accused were trying to snatch Naeem8217;s mobile set on September 16 while he was on way to the neighbouring Shamshad Market to recharge the SIM card. When the victim resisted, the miscreants hit him on the head with the butt of a country-made pistol, said Deputy Commissioner of Police Raghubir Lal.
The police have arrested Ashraf, Sadique and Tariq, residents of Lane No 12 in Jeevangarh locality, and seized a country-made gun, motorcycle UP81K-4583 and Naeem8217;s mobile set.
A resident of Aftab Hall at AMU, Naeem8217;s murder rocked the university campus leading to rampage and arson by agitating students. The authorities later closed the university sine die and asked students to vacate hostels.
Police claimed that Ashraf, one of the accused arrested for murder, is a drug addict.
8220;When Naeem shouted for help, Ashraf took out a country-made gun and hit him with the butt. But the gun went off and injured Naeem,8221; said Lal.
According to the police, the three accused didn8217;t want to kill Naeem. 8220;They accused claim that they came to know about Naeem8217;s death after reading newspapers the next day,8221; Lal said. Soon after the incident, the number of the snatched mobile handset was put on surveillance and was traced through its International Mobile Equipment Identity number, he said.
