Samutpakarn (Thailand), Feb 25: Fourth seed India trounced Indonesia 3-0 in their third round robin league match in the Federation Cup Asia-Oceania Group I qualifiers here today. The Indian girls, who had lost their previous tie to Chinese Taipei on Tuesday, had an easy outing against the Indonesians, Uzma Khan leading the way with a 6-4 6-2 win against Irawati Moerid.
Nirupama Vaidyanathan made it 2-0 with a 6-2 6-3 win over Wynne Prakusya while Sai Jayalakshmi teamed up with Nirupama in the doubles to settle the issue with a 6-2 7-6 (7-3) victory over Liza Andriyani and Irawati. In another Pool A match, Chinese Taipei beat Thailand 3-0. In Pool B, New Zealand edged out China 2-1 while Korea beat Pacific Oceania 3-0.
Davis tie at Calcutta
The Asia-Oceania Group One Davis Cup tie between India and China will be held at Calcutta from April 2-4. Honorary secretary of the All-India Tennis Association (AITA), Ramesh Desai, told The Indian Express , "since this tie is important for us to avoidrelegation, the players did not want to play China on hard court.” The hard courts of Chennai and Delhi were earlier being considered as possible venues Chennai, in particular, since Paes and Bhupathi will be playing the Gold Flake Open, the day after the Davis Cup tie, in Chennai.
