A group of local residents gathered at the L ward office on Tuesday morning and protested demanding action against illegal hawkers in Kurla (west).
Following this, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) removed as many as 71 unauthorised stalls and evicted 100 illegal hawkers from the vicinity. The raid was carried out by the local municipal L ward.
Civic officials said that these shops were set up in BMC’s L ward and 53 were located at Kurla and 18 of them were located at Vinoba Bhave Nagar.
Civic officials maintained that a notice was served to the shop owners and they were given a window of 15 days to evict the premises.
“Since the hawkers didn’t abide by the notice, the demolition drive was carried out. We had deployed two JCB vans along with four mini vehicles for carrying out the drive,” said an official.
According to the police, the incident occurred on Sunday when 29-year-old Akash Singh had gone with his father on Bullet to a nearby saloon shop for a haircut. One of the hawkers had parked his motorcycle outside the salon which was causing inconvenience to passersby. After Akash and the hawker entered into an argument over the parking, a group of six to seven hawkers arrived and allegedly assaulted Akash.
Two of them were purportedly seen beating Akash with a belt.
The Kurla police have registered a case of attempt to murder against six hawkers based on the statement of the victim. The police have traced the accused based on the videos. They will be produced in the court on Wednesday, said Deputy Commissioner of Police Mahendra Pandit.
