Revamp education system: Pawar

Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Wednesday urged to develop virtual university model to disseminate quality education to every strata of the society.

Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Wednesday urged to develop virtual university model to disseminate quality education to every strata of the society. “The University of Pune and other universities in the state should come together to build the model that can bring transition in the total education system,” he said.

Pawar was in the city to attend the 102nd convocation ceremony of the UoP.

“The society,which is bound together by the information revolution,has developed its own systems. Industries,that functioned under one roof till a few years ago,have diversified their processes to different parts of the world. This has been made possible only because of the information revolution. They are able to function in integrated manner,” Pawar said while speaking on the occasion.

“This virtual model can be replicated in the education field too,” he said.

The Minister said that the time has come to build an education system based on knowledge and different sources of education. He said,“There is a need to connect the student -teacher community,education experts and people from the industry through the Internet. It will enable the creation of an educational community. The educational institutes should contribute to it by creating curricula with the help of best teachers. These curricula can be made available to each and every student through e-management and teachers can act as mentors for them.”

Pawar said that the United Nations has called for strengthening education scenario for sustainable development. This will help eradicate poverty,lack of knowledge,unemployment and ill-health in the society. India is also a part of this programme that will make the country powerful by 2020.

Referring to the economic slowdown,Pawar said it would affect the new generation but it can be tackled with wisdom.

Praising UoP Vice Chancellor Narendra Jadhav for his efforts,Pawar said,“Jadhav’s initiatives like soft-skill programmes for students,encouraging teachers to do research and Samartha Bharat Abhiyan should be replicated in other universities too,” he said.

Governor S C Jamir presented ‘The President of India Shankar DayalSharma Gold Medal’ to Swapneel Kharade of K R T College,Nashik and ‘Former Chancellor Dr P C Alexander Inter-University Marathi Elocution Competition Award’ to Nachiket Kulkarni and Sushilkumar Shinde.

Jadhav presented the gold medals to students of 13 different faculties. He also welcomed the guests and presented the annual report.

Deans of the different faculties of the UoP,members of management council and academic councils were also present on the occasion.

This year as many as 318 PhDs,58 gold medals and 57,873 degrees were awarded in the convocation ceremony.
