Flying Sikh Milkha Singh might miss the Queen’s Baton Relay for the Commonwealth Games next month as the legendary athlete is off to the United States for a month along with wife to see their golfer-son Jeev in action there. “I am leaving for New York tonight. I would love to be back in Chandigarh when the CWG baton reaches here,but at this moment I cannot say that for sure,” said the 81-year-old. “Earlier,I had said yes to Chandigarh administration when they asked me if I was going to be available on July 3. Now,once I reach the United States,I will take a call and hope that I am able to be here for the event,” he added. Milkha also hoped an improved performance from the Indian athletes at the home turf. “Just have the will power and you can do it. We are the host nation and it is the question of our honour and I am sure our sportspersons will keep our flag flying high,” he said.

Chandigarh make winning start
Riding high on Rajinder’s brilliant hat-trick,Chandigarh made a winning start to their campaign when they outlcassed Gujarat 7-0 in the opening Cluster III encounter in the 47th Dr B C Roy Under-19 Trophy Football Tournament at the Mohun Bagan ground in Kolkata on Saturday. The Chandigarh Football Academy players were in brilliant form as other trainees Gagandeep Singh,Sehnaj Singh and Akashdeep also scored for the team. Ramanjot Singh was the other contributor. Tejinder Kumar coached Chandigarh team will face Kerala on Monday and then Mizoram on June 9. Meanwhile,Maharashtra secured full points by prevailing over plucky Haryana 2-1 in Cluster II fixture. In the same cluster,Orissa beat Andhra Pradesh by 4-0. At the Salt Lake Stadium,Jharkhand beat Arunachal Pradesh by 4-2.

Cricket tourney from June 13
The Chandigarh Sports Council will organise Hot Weather Open Cricket Tournament from June 13 at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium. The matches will be played on knock-out basis under the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) rules and regulations. The cash prizes will be awarded to the winners and runners-up teams along with trophies. The teams will have to submit an entry fee of Rs.1000 with Accountant of Chandigarh Sports Council at Sports Complex,Hockey Stadium,Sector 42. The entries along with receipt of entry fee must be submitted in writing on or before June 11 up to 5 pm to Naib Singh,Senior Manager,Sector 16 Cricket stadium,or Harish Sharma,cricket coach,Sports Department,Chandigarh Administration.

Bowlers set up Godrej and Boyce win
Fine bowling spells each by Manish Nandal (4 for 23) and Sunil Duggal (3 for 5) enabled Emirates Trading XI to defeat Godrej and Boyce XI by eight wickets in a league match of the Fifth Hot Weather Cup league Cricket Tournament played at Sector 16 Stadium on Sunday. Batting first,Godrej and Boyce XI could come up with a score of just 119 runs in 16.2 overs. . Manish Nanda was the pick of the bowlers as he took four wickets and broke through the middle order exposing the tail of Godrej and Boyce batting line up. Sunil Duggal did the rest of the job as he claimed three wickets for five runs. In reply,Emirates XI achieved the target in 14.3 overs. In the second match of the day,Deep Engineering XI defeated Key Bee Wareshousing XI in an encounter that went down to the last delivery. Deep Engineering XI scored 133 runs for 7 in 20 overs. In reply,Key Bee fell short by 6 runs.

Madhav anchors DAV win
A four-wicket haul by Madhav (4 for 9) propelled DAV Public School,Sector 15 team to am emphatic eight-wicket win over LIC ‘A’ in a league match of the First Ashok Vij Memorial U-14 Cricket Tournament played at Banyan Tree School,Sector 48. LIC ‘A’ team won the toss and elected to bat first. LIC ‘A’ team’s decision bat first proved to be a wrong one as they were bundled out for a total of 56 runs in 11.2 overs. Madhav was the pick of the bowlers as he claimed four wickets for nine runs,while Suneh claimed two wickets for 11 runs. Chasing an easy target of 57 runs,DAV Public School,Sector 15 reached the target with ease for the loss of two wickets.

<>Cricket Council of Chandigarh will hold trials for the selection of the Haryana team on June 7 at 3 pm at BTS-48,Chandigarh,for the 2nd All India National League Cricket Tournament to be held in CHandigarh from June 18.
