Jail inmate flees from police custody
Amritsar: An undertrial,identified as Happy,a resident of Tung Bala locality of the city on Friday gave the police a slip at the district courts complex where he was to be presented. He was booked in 2008 for chain snatching and since then was in jail,awaiting trial. The jail authorities said they would take action against the two guards on duty.
SGPC wants ban on Shadi Teen Crore Ki
Amritsar: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee on Friday,took strong exception to anti-Sikh and casteist remarks in the reality show ‘Shadi Teen Crore Ki being aired on NDTV Imagine. SGPC Chief Avtar Singh Makkar said that there various comments were made against the tenets of the Sikh religion and philosophy and demanded that the serial be taken off air immediately.
Court summons Guru Granth,SGPC angry
Amritsar: The SGPC on Friday took strong exception to the local court in Khanna,Ludhiana summoning the Guru Granth Sahib in a dispute relating to Gurdwara land. SGPC Chief Avtar Singh Makkar said that even if the court issued the summons by mistake,it is uncalled for as the ‘holy scripture can not be summoned at any court and only the managing persons of the Gurdwaras could be held responsible for the any acts.
Subsidy on cane transportation
Chandigarh: Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Friday announced a 50 per cent subsidy on cost of transportation of sugarcane supplied by cane growers,at out cane purchase centres for the current season 2010-11,thereby benefiting them to the tune of Rs 5 crore.
Hooda not to celebrate Holi
Chandigarh: Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda today said that he has decided not to celebrate Holi in view of the massive devastation caused by earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The CM described the massive devastation in Japan as a grave tragedy. He also urged the people to celebrate the festival of colours with communal amity and affection.
Principal booked for childs death
Kapurthala: After the death of a child during school hours on Friday,the schools principal was booked by the police. The child,Pankaj,4,studying at RLM Private School had reportedly vomited in the school on Friday resulting in his death. School authorities handed over the unconscious child to his parents who rushed him to the civil hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. The parents of the child have alleged that their son died due to carelessness by the school authorities.
Train mows down student
Phagwara: A student of Lovely Professional University was crushed to death by a train in the evening when he was crossing the railway tracks near Sugar Mill. The deceased Mayank Mongia was crossing the track when the Jammu-Mumbai Express was passing and he could not notice it.
