Sardar Anjum’s lyrics get a fresh spurt of life at a Commonwealth Games event at Wagah

Sardar Anjum, poet and lyricist,is overwhelmed with emotions every time he looks back to talk about his dream project — Karazdaar. It is a film he started making around 20 years ago but which never got completed because of numerous constraints.

However,in a unique instance of poetic justice,a song Anjum wrote for the film, will now be heard far and wide,as it will be sung by the Wadali Brothers and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan at the Wagah Border on June 25. “The torch of the Commonwealth Games coming from Pakistan will be received at Wagah and this song will be sung by the artistes at the welcome function. It’s an overwhelming feeling for me,for it is an important place and moment. What’s more,it is a part of a project that’s closest to my heart and one I still aim and hope to complete someday,” he says, adding that he has also composed an individual song for Rahat for the occasion.

Strong-headed and opinionated as a poet,Anjum is not one who minces words. Events around him become the subject of his poetry, whether it is politics, violence or acts of terrorism. His lyrics are deep but simple, with Anjum commenting on current events through his verses.

The particular song that was chosen was written in the context of two countries whose people are torn apart by hatred and violence. “Irrespective of the relations between India and Pakistan, when it comes to cultural life,we have to avoid harsh truths and talk of love, friendship and peace, which is the core and soul of my song,” he signs off.
