Sources said the Opposition believed that a free and fair election could be conducted only with the deployment of central forces and cited incidents of alleged violence that took place during the previous panchayat and civic polls under the TMC rule.

“Common men who are popular in their locality and have a good reputation and want to become a BJP candidate for civic polls are free to sent their biodata for consideration,” said a senior BJP leader.

In a statement, the Raj Bhavan said the minister’s approach “with respect to the role of governor of the state, to say the least, betrays elementary ignorance both of the Constitution and the role of the governor”.

Under the 75-day campaign, around 75,000 TMC workers will reach out to 2.5 crore people across the state. The programme will conclude on May 10.
Sharing broad contours of the new campaign, party sources said workers will go door to door and try to convince people why Banerjee is the only alternative for the state and why people should discard other parties.

Meanwhile, the party also showed purported videos of a sting operation and alleged that one of the state ministers has taken money from a person. The accused state minister was not available for comments.
The municipal elections are likely to be held in mid-April.
“We are confined to a room in Shahdara since Monday night. We could not go out as violent clashes broke out. There is no food; we cannot step out of our room now as section 144 has been imposed,” Kalam said.
BJP state general secretary Rathindra Bose told reporters Tuesday, “We have received the permission on Monday for the proposed rally. Now, we will go ahead with our plan as per schedule.”
The nation-building drive will continue till March 23 and the party's state unit is planning to expand its organisation before taking a call on its participation in civic elections.
On Wednesday, the voting passed off peacefully without any untoward incident. The counting of the votes will take place on Thursday.
BJP leader Babul Supriyo said since Tapas Paul got involved in a scam, Mamata Banerjee and her party maintained a distance from him.
Mamata Banerjee also alleged that another TMC leader Sultan Ahmed had died of cardiac arrest as he was under stress after being named as an accused in the Narada tapes scandal of 2016. Ahmed, a former Union minister, had died in 2017.
At a meeting with the officials of district administration, the WBSEC directed them to complete all preparatory work for the civic polls.
West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) sources said the examination of the accused has been cancelled and he has been expelled.
