It’s good to see Bihar’s growth rate improving. A state’s growth is dependent on many factors including natural

resource endowments, level of industrialisation and governance. If Bihar’s former politicians had not exploited the state’s heritage and resources,it would have been immensely better and one of the richer states in India.

If the ordinary people of Bihar can get out of the shackles of caste and identity, then it will be assured that Bihar will be near the top. Bihar does have intelligent students who make it to good institutions across the country. The only thing they need to do is contribute to their state’s growth.

Not just words

This refers to ‘Why not to lose your cool’ (IE,January 14). Indeed

former PM Deve Gowda’s state may not be proud of him for betraying himself thus. He revealed himself as one who can be vulgar from a public platform and his audience must have felt ashamed of his words about the incumbent chief minister. One can understand Gowda’s anxiety to not lose relevance in the state’s politics. Gowda has disgraced himself and his party. Further,H.D. Kumaraswamy is trying to defend the indefensible by saying one should understand his “father’s feelings” rather than focusing on his “words”.

Sadly, the Neetu Singh episode is yet another proof of the utter whimsicality, insensitivity and highhandedness of our law enforcement agencies (‘Sovereign whims’,IE,January 15). It is unfortunate that an academic city like Pune could have its administration manipulated to deprive a foreign student — at a prestigious institution like FTII — her basic freedoms. This done without Central and judicial intervention is all the more shocking. To top it all, while the Union government has reversed the deportation order against Singh, allowing her to return to FTII to finish her course, the state authorities have imposed bizarre conditions on her.

Bitter shock

It’s shocking that sugar is selling at Rs 50 per kilogram and the government took such a long time to react (‘Sugar free’,IE,January 15). But it is yet to take adequate steps to bring the price down. All talk by politicians that poor monsoon, floods, etc are responsible for the shortage of sugar is misleading. Politicians and sugar traders are responsible for the uncontrollable sugar price rise. There is no shortage of sugar in the country. It is a fear intentionally generated. The government needs to wake up to the reality and act fast in bringing down sugar prices along with prices of all essential food items.
