Opinion IPL bewilderment

• Shekhar Gupta has, very rightly, observed in IPL baby,IPL bathwater that BCCI does not need government control or oversight and that the government should call a halt to this ridiculous televised tamasha. The IPL,ever since its inception in 2008,has been the biggest reality show on Indian TV; but now, when the skeletons are tumbling out at lightening speed the average cricket fan stands bewildered, confused and aghast at the scale of allegedly fraudulent activities behind a veneer of showmanship, glamour and unmatched media hype. It is the aam aadmi who has been led up the garden path; and it is,therefore,of paramount importance that the government investigate it and bring the findings to the public domain.

Chaff & grain
• Shekhar Gupta has offered a most sensible and effective therapy to deal with the problem of Indian cricket: corporatisation minus politicisation. He has rightly hailed the IPL as a wonderful product, which has attracted envy and admiration worldwide. It has created a wide network of cricket infrastructure and brought huge financial benefits for a large number of young cricketers, besides thousands of other jobs. What it needs, however,is transparency and corporate discipline. Gupta has validly attacked indiscriminate raids by armies of taxmen as if they have busted an underground mafia network; and this ridiculous televised tamasha which shows our news channels in the worst possible light. There is no indication of any effort to sift the chaff from the grain.

Caste violence
• This refers to the editorial,Caste in iron. The Mirchpur incident was not the first one in which Dalits were attacked by the Jats in Haryana. Earlier, the attack on Dalits by the same community in Gohana had rocked Haryana and Punjab. No doubt the same khap panchayat mindset was working in torching the houses of Dalits in Hisar. The political class of the state always remain tight-lipped on brutal killings of Dalits because of the political, economic and social sway of the perpetrators. On the other hand, the poor Balmikis have always been a soft target for them. In the past, these perpetrators of such attacks got away scot-free because of the caste politics of the state.

• The heinous crime of burning alive a father and daughter in Hisar is a clear reminder of the Dark Ages. Villages in Punjab and Haryana have become the grounds of honour killings and caste wars. There is anarchy in these villages where law is administered by khap panchayats and the so-called superior castes. Seeds of education have been long required in these regions, without which we shall fail to call ourselves a fast-growing nation.
