Old World Charm

Life,as seen through Nazia’s eyes,is not easy.

Life,as seen through Nazia’s eyes,is not easy. She is an actor who sees the world in her art yet remains oblivious to the real world. Now,the life of Nazia will come alive in Delhi through Where did I Leave my Purdah?,a play written by Mahesh Dattani and directed by Lilette Dubey. Dattani’s noted play will premiere in India at the 11th edition of Old World Theatre Festival that kick-starts in the Capital on October 12.

“We’re starting with a premiere and have a debut towards the end . The idea is to bring to the fore what is happening in the mainstream as well as in contemporary theatre,” says Vidyun Singh, curator of the festival. Sure enough, while Dattani’s play will start the festival,it will be Nandita Das’ directorial theatre debut — Between the Lines, which will be performed on October 20. The play has its national premiere at Mumbai’s National Centre for Performing Arts on October 6 and 7.

Another interesting narrative is Nothing Like Lear, directed by Rajat Kapoor. With Atul Kumar and Vinay Pathak as lead actors, the 80-minute comedy looks at life through the eyes of a clown,a very depressed one at that. Kapoor’s clown has been crying for days for plenty of reasons — he has no one around,he is getting old and moreover,he has been forced to perform this play. Yet another play,Chinese Coffee,an American play written by Ira Lewis, which proved to be Al Pacino’s comeback vehicle in 2010,has been recreated by Danish Husain. Produced by Hoshruba Repertory and starring Aamir Bashir and Husain himself,Chinese Coffee talks about friendship and the loss of it.
