The Chandigarh Traffic Police has identified five major traffic-prone and congestion-sensitive road stretches in Chandigarh.

The identified traffic prone areas are Zirakpur Barrier to Hallo Majra Light Point on NH-5; Hallo Majra Light Point to Tribune Chowk on NH-5; Housing Board Light Point to Transport Light Point; Mullanpur Barrier to Sector 25/38 Light Point; and PGI Chowk to Mullanpur Barrier. These corridors will now be taken up for targeted interventions to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and minimise road fatalities under the Safe System Approach, said a police official.
As part of the observance of National Road Safety Month, the Chandigarh Traffic Police organised a Road Safety Dialogue-cum-Workshop at the UT Guest House, Sector 6, on the theme of “Safe System Approach.”

The workshop aimed to promote a holistic and evidence-based approach to road safety with a focus on safer road design, reduced crash severity and protection of vulnerable road users.
Dr Sagar Preet Hooda, Director General of Police, Chandigarh, attended the closing ceremony as the chief guest, while Pushpendra Kumar, IPS, Inspector General of Police, Chandigarh, was present during the opening session as the guest of honour.

The event was attended by traffic experts, officers from the UT Engineering Department, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh, Architecture Department and senior officers of the Chandigarh Police.
To address issues on the identified road stretches, five dedicated teams were constituted. Each team comprised traffic experts, representatives from the UT Engineering Department, Architecture Department and Municipal Corporation Chandigarh, along with the concerned DSPs and Traffic Inspectors of Chandigarh Traffic Police. The teams conducted detailed field surveys to assess on-ground conditions, traffic flow patterns, road design shortcomings, pedestrian safety concerns and enforcement challenges.

Based on the field surveys, observations and recommendations will be compiled into a detailed report and forwarded to the departments concerned for necessary rectification and implementation.
Key recommendations emerging from the workshop include development of a flyover or elevated road from 66 KV Junction Chowk to Mullanpur Chowk.

Proposals were also made for new connectivity roads from Garcha Turn Light Point towards Panchkula Sectors 17 and 18, and from Colony No. 4 Light Point towards Daria village and Panchkula.
The workshop recommended construction of an underbridge at Hallo Majra Light Point and Poultry Farm Chowk to ensure pedestrian safety, development of dedicated cycle tracks on both sides from Airport Light Point to Tribune Chowk, construction of an underpass near Government High School, Sarangpur opposite the Botanical Garden, and another underpass near PGI and Panjab University.

Considering the heritage status of Chandigarh, the feasibility of constructing underpasses at strategic locations such as Hallo Majra, Poultry Farm Chowk on Dakshin Marg, the road dividing PGI and Panjab University on Madhya Marg, and near Government High School, Sarangpur opposite the Botanical Garden, will also be explored, said the police.
