Seeking implementation of 10 per cent (%) quota for economically weaker sections (EWS) in the coming election to local bodies in Gujarat, 80-100 representatives of several non-reserved communities met in Gandhinagar on Tuesday.

After the meeting, the representatives demanded that the local body polls should be held only after implementing the 10% EWS reservation.

Representatives from communities such as Patidar, Kshatriya, Soni and Brahmin participated in the meeting, which they called ‘Chintan Shibir’. Dinesh Bambhaniya, Varun Patel, Manoj Panara, Ramjubha Jadeja and Hemang Raval were present, among others.

Bambhaniya told mediapersons later that they thanked the government in the state and at the Centre for granting the 10 per cent EWS reservation to non-reserved communities in education and government jobs.

“The state government should give us social justice by implementing 10% EWS reservation in elections. We demand that it (quota) be implemented in the coming local body election,” Bambhaniya said.

According to Bambhaniya, they have also raised objections to the roster announced for reservation in elections in local bodies on the basis of the recommendations of the Kalpesh Jhaveri Commission.

Bambhaniya claimed, “There is violation of Supreme Court guidelines in this (issuing roster order of reservation). Reservation has been given in a haphazard manner…The reservation was to be provided on the basis of empirical data…”

He added, “We demand that the state government makes the Jhaveri Commission report public ….on the basis of which 27% flat OBC reservation has been announced in the local body elections.”

Bambhaniya said the communities would seek support of every MP/MLA of Gujarat in connection with their demands.

“If the government does not accept our demands, we will politically work against them in the elections,” Bambhaniya said.

According to sources in the Gujarat State Election Commission, elections to various local bodies in Gujarat are expected to be held in February-March. These local bodies include 15 municipal corporations, a number of municipalities, district panchayats and taluka panchayats.
