Racing around

Though it seems a tad impossible, if there are any doubts about Mumbai8217;s status as the glamour capital of the country, they were surely disproved last Saturday. The Derby Night, a glamourous prelude to an even more exciting affair 8212; the annual McDowell Derby 8212; was hosted with much fanfare a la Mallya style. Which meant the Who8217;s Who of the Glitterati, great cuisine and drinks which flowed ceaselessly from the UB cellars. The night kicked off with a fashion show which displayed works of some of the hippest brands in the business. Melange, Small Shop, Shaina NC and Rocky S, all strutted their stuff on beautiful bodies of Madhu Sapre, Helen Brodie, Nayonika Chatterjee and Rahul Dev to name a few. The show ended with a bang when the Brazilian dance troupe, Delirio Tropical, showed Mumbaikars what the Lambada was really all about.

The favoured dress code for the city8217;s beautiful women was that eternal fashion number 8212; the little black dress. And of course, the co-host of the eveningalong with Brian Tellis, Malaika Arora, now Khan, was no exception.

Anniversary bash

When Andhra tycoon-cum-philanthropist-cum-MP, T Subbirami Reddy, and his petite wife Indira came down to Mumbai to celebrate their 32nd wedding anniversary on Saturday, the guest-list for their exclusive party read like the Who8217;s Who of the city8217;s elite. The hugely popular Reddy, who has also financed a few Yash Chopra films like Chandni and Lamhe, had everyone from industrialists to politicians to film stars showing up at Taj Mahal Hotel8217;s Rendezvous to join the celebrations. Murli Deora was among the first to walk in, followed by Tina and Anil Ambani along with Zee8217;s Subhash Chandra. The Reddys 8212; both dressed in carefully chosen, simple yet elegant outfits 8212; were all smiles as they ushered in their celebrity guests. R P Goenka, the Videocon Dhoots, Laxminarayan Mittal, Jet Airways8217; Naresh Goel, Mukesh Ambani, Ravi Ruia, Anand Mahindra, G P and Ashok Hinduja, Sushil Kumar Shinde, Vijay Darda,Yash Chopra 8212; with sons Aditya and Uday, Yash Johar and beta Karan, Ramesh Sippy, Subhash Ghai, Vinod Khanna, Shobha De, Jeetendra, Rakesh Roshan, Sridevi and Boney Kapoor along with brother Anil, Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan, Javed Akhtar, Kirons 8212; Kher and Joneja, the Hyderabad girls 8212; Tabu looking gorgeous as ever and Naghma dressed to the hilt and Shiamak Davar were among those who made it to the classy affair. Needless to say, the food and the booze which, of course, flowed freely were exquisite. But most impressive of all were the charming Reddys 8212; all smiles throughout the evening. They made the perfect hosts, personally overseeing the entire do and ensuring that each member of this select gathering was well looked-after. A memorable evening for a wonderful couple.

Wedding bliss

Among the many parties that were thrown to celebrate Gautam Singhania8217;s wedding with Nawaz Mody, was one at J K House, Bhulabhai Desai Road. This was the Singhania mega-bash on Wednesday, two daysbefore the marriage of the year. The terrace above the Raymond8217;s showroom was transformed into an exotic outdoor venue with meters of pink and white gauze which rose from the second floor to the top, to form a canopy. Seen partying till the wee hours of the morning were the Khans 8212; Salman, Arbaaz and Malaika. Also present were Vijay Mallaya 8212; who was in town for the Derby 8212; Alyque Padamsee, Sharon Prabhakar, Gary Lawyer, Hafeez Contractor, Mehr Jesia and Arjun Ramphal. Nawaz was dressed in a stunning emerald green gara and at one point, she even went up on stage with her girlfriends, including bum chum Jasmine Barucha, to belt out a song for the guests. And in a touching gesture, to make her daughter-in-law feel at home, Mrs Singhania too wore the traditional Parsee gara. The food, a vegetarian spread, was prepared on the spot by master chefs who turned up the cuisine of your choice in minutes. There were 25 desserts of all sorts to tempt even the most emaciated models who were there inhordes.
