KCB decides to widen the killer stretch
The killer stretch of the Pune-Mumbai highway running through Khadki will finally be widened and dividers and streetlights placed.
The Khadki Cantonment Board KCB has decided to commence the work after a protracted battle with the National Highway authorities. It has invited tenders from contractors for the road widening. The road work has a budgetary provision of Rs 12.97 lakh.
Cantonment executive officer Ajay Kumar told The Indian Express that they had received sanction from Southern Command headquarters for the road widening process and hence had decided to invite the tenders.
The National Highway authorities had written to the KCB, conveying their inability to widen the stretch due to lack of funds. The CEO said the board could go ahead with the plan after the National Highway authorities expressed their unwillingness to widen the stretch.
Ajay Kumar said that the tenders will be placed for approval at the board meeting to be held shortly. 8220;Once the tenders are approved, we will begin work on a war-footing within 30 days,8221; he said.
The road stretch had become a travellers8217; nightmare over the years as it has claimed scores of life. One on side of the road the streetlights have remained non-functional for years. The road surface, according to the shopkeepers located along the highway, has not been resurfaced for decades. And the highway width does not match the one in PMC and the PCMC limits, where 61 metre and 40 metre widening has been undertaken.
