With an aim to ensuring high standard of research in the citys institutes,no research institute can gain University of Pune (UoP) recognition unless it fulfils a set of very stringent criteria.
Now,every institute will have to ensure it has a permanent principal or director and two research guides working on a full-time basis. It would also become mandatory for research institutes to have post-graduate courses for registering candidates of subjects concerned. Institutes will also have to submit a progress report on research work carried out every six months.
The university has more than 300 recognised research institutes under its jurisdiction, which would now have to comply with the new criteria. Among other criteria,it has been decided that no faculty can be a research associate at more than two institutes.
The research institute for law, engineering and pharmacy faculties,at the time of their inception, will be awarded recognition for a period of three years only. Their validity for renewal of recognition will be five years, and thereafter they will have to comply with all the criteria set by the university without exception in order to continue the recognition.
While the university is progressing on the path of academic excellence,we do not want to lag behind on research aspect. We have fine-tuned the criteria for research institutes so that the research output is up to the mark, a senior university official said.
