The irrigation department on Tuesday released 15,000 cusecs water (cubic feet per second) till 5.30 pm from Khadakwasla dam and officials said they would release up to 20,000 cusecs through the night with a heavy wet spell in the catchment areas. The catchment areas registered 47 mm rainfall.
The average storage of the four dams Khadakwasla,Panshet,Temghar and Varasgaon recorded by the irrigation department was 14.24 TMC with 48.87 per cent storage.
We have had good rain in the catchment areas and officials will continue to release water according to the amount of rain received. We had intimated the corporation and the district collectorate about the water release so that they can take necessary precautions,” said executive engineer of Khadakwasla irrigation circle S N Bolbhat.
With the dam reaching about 88 per cent storage,the irrigation department started releasing water from 8 am. The storage level of the dam had attained 1.74 TMC as registered by the flood control cell.
The Met department recorded 29.4 mm rainfall and officials said heavy spell is likely to continue for Konkan and Goa,Madhya Maharashtra as well as the Marathwada regions. “The offshore trough and wind in Arabian Sea is likely to cause more rain in the next 48 hours,” said Met officials.
While Panshet had attained 4.94 TMC with 79 mm rainfall and the dam was about 46.45 per cent of its capacity,Varasgaon had a storage level of 6.19 TMC with 87 mm rainfall and storage of about 48.29 per cent and Temghar was 8.36 TMC with 99 mm rainfall and 36.72 per cent.
According to the irrigation department,there have been good rain as registered from June 1 in the catchment areas. Panshet registered 1,135 mm rainfall,Varasgaon at 1,175 mm,Temghar was 1,564 mm rainfall and Khadakwasla till Tuesday had registered 407 mm rainfall in the catchment areas taking the total storage capacity of all the four dams to 403.61.
