The students of secondary and higher secondary schools (class IX to XII) will get detailed reasoning of the marks they get in exams if the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) accepts the recommendations of experts to this effect. The experts have also suggested changing the pattern of syllabus in a way to make students think more analytically.
The MSBSHSE conducted a day-long workshop on Thursday for about 250 school principals and teachers to deliberate upon the state board curriculum,assessment method,teachers training and effective use of e-learning. Five experts were invited by the board to apprise the audience in their respective topics who gave some important recommendations. The recommendations will now be passed on to the boards of study of MSBSHSE. It will take another year to implement the suggestions.
At present,the students are assessed on the basis of the marks they get. If they could get the reasoning of marks they get,it will help them improve next year, said Dr Umesh Pradhan,former board of studies member,who was one of the experts. Of course,before that the current pattern of syllabus that stresses on mugging up should be changed. It should be in such a way that it can enhance problem-solving capacity of the students, he said.
The current pattern of question paper is based on memory testing. It should be converted into testing of Higher Order of Thinking Skills (HOTS). HOTS include skills like reasoning,rationalising,problem solving and finding solutions, he said.
Dr Hemala Parasnis,former registrar of SNDT University said that training was necessary not just for teachers,but also for non-teaching staff. Some,from the non-teaching staff,get promoted as clerks who need to understand how the system works,how to manage his work,the importance of soft skills, she said. Harshavardhan Kadepurkar gave his suggestions on language pattern of the state board in comparison with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). It was suggested that on the lines of functional English,functional Marathi should be introduced. The workshop was a first step towards changing the old system to make it more relevant. The recommendations will be discussed in the various boards of study and then the final decision will be taken on that basis, Vijaysheela Sardesai,chairperson of MSBSHSE. Dr Laxmi Rao spoke on the status of maths and science in the state syllabus. During the second half of the session,the participants were divided into five groups which discussed each aspects in detail.
