Elevator collapse leaves 12 hurt

Bank employees said the incident took place around 10.30 am on Thursday. The employees had to force their way in to evacuate the 12 men stuck inside.

As many as three persons suffered fractures while nine others sustained minor injuries when a lift inside the regional office of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) in Gomti Nagar fell from the fifth to the ground floor “because of a technical snag”.

Bank employees said the incident took place around 10.30 am on Thursday. The employees had to force their way in to evacuate the 12 men stuck inside.

Among the three persons with fractures was a NABARD’s district development officer,who,along with other bank employees and representatives of its federation,had boarded the lift to reach the fifth floor from where it fell,the police later said.

The injured were rushed to Mayo Hospital. NABARD Additional General Manager Rakesh Gupta said the lift fell because of “a technical snag”. Another official said the company,which was given the contract for its maintenance,has been served a notice.
