Senior Trinamool Congress leader and close aide of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee,Mukul Roy,on Thursday led the attack on the state election commission though in a veiled manner as the frustration grew in the government camp over the poll panel sticking to its stand on Central forces for conducting free and fair panchayat poll in the state.
Roy said the government has acted as per the Constitution and sermonised constitutional bodies to function accordingly.
Trinamool Congress government was formed with two-thirds majority and it knows its constitutional responsibilities. It has announced dates remaining within its constitutional rights, Roy told mediepersons on the government unilaterally announcing a two-phase poll on the night of March 22.
We hope other constitutional bodies should also function as per the Constitution, he added in an obvious reference to the state election commission.
The former Railway minister discounted Election Commissioner Meera Pandeys second visit to Raj Bhavan on Thursday, saying,Anybody can meet the Governor.
The Trinamool is prepared to fight the elections whether it is held today or tomorrow, with the deployment of state police, military or even forces from outside the country. The party success will exceed all the expectations, he said.
Stating that superintendence, direction and control of the panchayat polls as per the Constitution wrest with the state election commission only when it issues a notification for the panchayat election Roy added that no such notification has been issued so far.
He also took the opportunity to attack the opposition parties, saying those facing defeat are speaking about deferring the polls.
He said the panchayat elections will be a vote for change since most panchayat bodies were now governed by the CPM.
