Actor-director Radhika Chaudhari on her win at the recent Web-Series Festival held in Los Angeles
Acting is the only thing I know, announces Los Angeles-based actress Radhika Chaudhari, who began her career with South Indian cinema. Her career fostered through roles in 30 films, including two Bollywood outings in Tere Naam and Khushi, but a post-marriage shift to LA brought about a mild detour in her Bollywood plans. There were a lot of Indians involved in good work and I wanted to work with them, says Chaudhari. On the insistence of a friend, she did take up a role in a web-series called Bollywood to Hollywood,a funny take on the lives of two starry-eyed individuals from Mumbai, who wish to be famous in Hollywood. Her choice was vindicated when Chaudhari recently became the first Indian to win an award for the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress at the LA Web-Series Festival.
The role just happened for me, says Chaudhari, who insists on repeating the cliche. But she does mention that winning an award was the last thing on her mind when she got back to acting after a hiatus. The important thing was to get noticed. I also managed to produce and direct a 17-minute short film,Orange Blossom, which won a Silver Ace Award for Best Short Film at the Las Vegas Film Festival, she says.
Chaudhari is all praises for the movie-making traditions followed in the US,as everything is planned right down to the last detail. Even if its a pilot project,a web-based one or a studio production, they double check everything. The discipline associated with the process is the best part, she says. Having won plaudits at her initial steps in the entertainment industry in LA,Chaudhari now has bigger plans. And she is ready to take her last appearance on the cancelled NBC series Outsourced,in her stride. It helped me connect to the people involved in the business, says Chaudhari referring to her American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) membership.
Chaudhari is currently working on her second film. There are plans for a cross-over television show too, involving producers from India and American actors of Indian-origin. Everything is still in the conceptualisation stage, she smiles.
