The Haryana Police’s ‘seriousness’ towards the case pertaining to alleged sexual exploitation of inmates of Rohtak shelter home was admonished by the vacation bench on Friday. To begin with, there were no senior or ‘responsible’ officers to assist the Haryana law officer in the Court. When asked for details,an Additional Director General of Police came rushing to the Court. After two hours of argument, when the Haryana law officer was vehemently opposing the transfer of investigation of the case to the CBI,the ADGP stood up to meekly say that the police had already recommended the case to the CBI. Stunned, the Bench asked why was this not informed at the outset. A blank expression was all what the Bench received in response. Then, when confronted as to why the Haryana Police had surrendered so easily, the ADGP ‘clarified’ that the ‘recommendation’ of transfer was made only after the Haryana government asked for it. To top it all, neither the law officer, nor the ADGP were aware that the Haryana government had already decided to hand over the case to the CBI and had even issued a press release while the hearing was already on.

It is personal

During a meeting,on the issue of solving the parking woes in Sector 17,held last week, the officials of Chandigarh Administration and a couple of lawyers strongly objected when a member mooted the idea to convert Parade Ground into a parking lot. When asked by other members as to how elderly would reach Sector 17,if no vehicle was allowed to be parked in the sector, the said member casually questioned the number of old people visiting Sector 17. Taking offence, all the other members stoutly rubbished the idea giving personal examples of their parents who love to visit the Sector-17 market.

Look who’s talking

With both, the student council and senate elections at Panjab University (PU) being scheduled to be held at the same time (in September),students seem to be at an advantage. While every year students are forced to curtail their campaigning, this time, nearly 25 per cent of senior officials of the university and colleges – who pull up students – are themselves busy campaigning for the senate election. The student leaders have also been trying to capture instances, where the aspiring senators, may go over the board while delivering speeches.

Right precedent

As the Panjab University has withdrawn the right of contest in elections and hostel facility from three representatives of Student Organisation of Panjab University, who have been booked for a murder case, recently, others in the university are seen mending their ways. So much so,that a minor scuffle between a SOPU and PUSU member at one of the PU hostels on Friday – which under most circumstances would have ended into a huge fight between both the parties – ended in a quick compromise. Both the students were seen requesting the Chief Security Officer PK Dhawan to save their hostel seats, citing their compromise.

Councillors’ U-turn

It seems paying for parking tickets is getting out of the budget for MC councillors of the city. For after two weeks of creating ruckus in the MC house meeting held last month and demanding an inquiry against Mayor Raj Bala Malik for having unethically taken 406 free-parking passes and distributing them among unauthorised persons, which led to the cancellation of all the parking passes in the city, the councillors have again mooted a fresh proposal joining hands with the ruling party councillors to restart the free-parking passes facility forgetting their old differences. Now that’s what they call burying the hatchet.

State cadres strengthened

Following the communication of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram to the Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal assuring him of 60:40 ratio of state cadre officers in the UT Administration, the state cadre officers of Punjab and Haryana, who till now felt left out due to strengthening of AGMUT cadre officers, have now got a new lease of life. A senior official of Punjab cadre was heard saying,”finally our stand has been vindicated” heaving a sigh of relief.

Star struck?
Not really

As the Indian boxing team left for Ireland tour early this week, some of the Indian boxers, including Beijing Olympic bronze medalist, visited the Haryana Police headquarters at Panchkula.

Vijender is a DSP with the Haryana Police, and as the stars made his way into the headquarters, most of the police men could not identify them. Later when Singh came out, most of them met him and came till the gate to drop the boxers.

Beating the heat

From hill stations to swimming pools, sportspersons have found ways to beat the unrelenting heat. While the Sports Department,UT Administration, has taken its trainees for a high altitude camp to Shilaroo in Shimla, the not-so-fortunate ones are busy diving from height at various swimming pools across the city. Distance might separate these sportspersons, but one thing is common between them: both are beating the heat.
