CN and Heard: Cautious

Lawyers practising in the Punjab and Haryana High Court are a harried lot.

Lawyers practising in the Punjab and Haryana High Court are a harried lot. The Bar Council of the court, the governing body of lawyers, has been issuing notices to lawyers asking them to explain why proceedings should not be initiated against them for getting their names published in newspapers. In order to avoid problems, some lawyers, who earlier insisted upon publishing their names, have been sending e-mails,text messages and letters to various journalists requesting them not to publish their names till “warnings” were over. Rightly so,the lawyers are exercising caution.

Disappointed

Lawyers vying for promotions, seem to be disappointed with the recent elevations of two senior High Court Judges. Lawyers will now have to wait, especially after the promotion of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi of the High Court to Supreme Court and Justice M M Kumar’s elevation as Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court.

Attention!

Despite Kings XI Punjab not having paid dues to the Punjab Police for the Indian Premier League matches played at the PCA stadium,Punjab Police personnel are always at the stadium before any match to guard the stadium. Earlier this week, when players of Kolkata Knight Riders were training at the PCA stadium ahead of a match, some of the police personnel guarding the nets were enjoying their afternoon snacks. An angry Knight Riders security advisor told the personnel to stop eating and guard the players, following which the police officials stopped eating and performed their ‘duty’.

All-rounder

It is a known fact that Australian pacer Brett Lee loves India. After a Kolkata Knight Riders practice session,as local cricketers approached him for an autograph, the Aussie player surprised the young fans by conversing with them in Hindi. Having played for Kings XI Punjab for four years,Lee is quite comfortable with Hindi and Punjabi.

Tough find

Finding way on the day of a match day at PCA Stadium is a herculean task for spectators. While most spectators were seen asking police personnel the way to different gates at the venue, many police officials from Sangrur,Moga and Pathankot were also seen asking the way to the stadium. With roads being blocked owing to security concerns, even police officials had to face difficulty.

Flexible

The amalgamation of two sports is an interesting and rare idea. However, during the opening ceremony of the Centre of Excellence at Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association, trainees of gymnastics demonstrated their yoga skills. Tennis players were also seen stretching their bodies.

Misplaced Priorities

The construction of pedestrian pathways by the Municipal Corporation just before the hearing of a case at the Punjab and Haryana High Court caused an array of reactions. The speed at which the proposal was approved and constructed within a few days has amazed many people. While the proposals in the civic body are mooted and then put in cold storage, the efficiency shown in construction of the pathways led many to wish for a similar competence in other projects. The need for the pathways is being ascertained by people.

Help,please

At a recent launch of a documentary on road safety,a police official received a phone call. After attending the call, the officer,in order to give an example of the mentality of Indians regarding traffic rules, told the audience about the call. He said a person from Delhi had been trying to call him because he had been caught by a Traffic police official for violating traffic norms and needed his help.

Sorry,Sir

O hearing the news of a NRI being kidnapped, the media in the city rushed to the police station where officers were busy discussing the situation. As no one was allowed to go in,everyone was eager to know about the discussions going on. A scribe was asked by his colleagues to see if he could go inside. As the person was about to go in,two newly-recruited cops stopped him. In the meantime, some scribes commented that it seemed something was wrong with the police as they had stopped a station house officer from another police station from entering. The police officials thought they failed to recognise an officer and saluted the scribe, leaving everyone in a fit of laughter.

Hospitable Hospital!

One of the oldest government hospitals in the city,Government Multi Specialty Hospital,Sector 16,has now earned a new identity, that of the most ‘hospitable’ hospital,as patients are not only treated, but are also served there. As a result, many patients, especially jail inmates ,refuse to leave the hospital even after the doctors discharge them. Recently,a jail inmate from Punjab, enjoyed his stay at the hospital for over a fortnight even after his treatment was over.

Work with Play

At a recent auction of liquor vends held by the UT Excise and Taxation Department, senior officials of the UT Administration had a great escape from an otherwise hectic schedule. Three bureaucrats,Deputy Commissioner Brijendra Singh,Secretary (IT) Prerna Puri and RLA Parshuram V Kavle, who were present to oversee the most revenue earning auction, caught up with each other over snacks.
