Caught by surprise

Senior IAS officer J P Singh’s appointment as member of the Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission surprised many last week.

Senior IAS officer J P Singh’s appointment as member of the Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (HPPSC) surprised many last week. Most of his fellow bureaucrats, including those aspiring for the job, were taken aback with the development. Many rang up friends in the media to be sure if the news was authentic and who actually backed Singh to get the slot. But all were in complete agreement that J P Singh had been an officer of high integrity. Insiders now say it was his Army background that weighted high over other aspirants. His predecessor, too, was a retired Army officer,Brigadier L S Thakur.

Anurag in limelight again

During the recent World Cup cricket matches, especially the quarter finals, semifinals and the final,BJP MP Anurag Thakur remained under focus for his presence in the live audience. Prior to this,he was in the limelight when the BJYM,which he heads, led the Rashtriya Ekta Yatra to hoist the national flag at Lal Chowk,Srinagar,on January 26. As focus shifts back on the IPL matches at Dharamsala’s cricket stadium this week,Anurag will be a prime figure again, brushing shoulders with his CM father Prem Kumar Dhumal, top personalities of Bollywood, the corporate world and sports, and above all Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama. Surely a feel good factor for the BJP’s ‘youth icon’.

New era in Cong

Congress in-charge for Himachal Pradesh Birender Singh,a veteran Haryana politician, seems to have caused some discomforts in the party circles by his recent remark,“Congress mein naye yug ki shruaat hogi”. He was definitely hinting at the emergence of a new leadership if Congress returns to power in the state. Union Minister Virbhadra Singh, who has already joined hands with CLP leader Vidya Stokes to keep PCC president Kaul Singh Thakur out of the race for the chief minister’s post,is making extra rounds of the state to prove that the two (Stokes and himself) cannot be written off merely because they have grown old.
