The influx of beachgoers and bad civic sense has led to plastic pollution across beaches around the world. While eco-warriors often lead beach cleanliness drives, these initiatives are not always scalable or practical. Now a video that proposes a solution to large-scale beach cleaning is raking in likes.
The video shows how a mechanical raking beach cleaning machine works. As per beachcleaner.com, “Raking machines employ rows of offset tines to rake through the sand, combing materials from under the sand’s surface. The tines then deflect the materials off a curved deflector shield and onto a moving conveyor, which deposits the materials in the beach cleaner’s bucket, or hopper.”
A video of one such machine in action was posted online by popular Instagram account @hergun1insaat. The undated video was simply titled, “coastal beach cleaning process…”
Commenting on it, an Instagram user wrote, “the best thing that people have come up with is the mechanization of work👏”. Another person wrote, “What a principle but just imagine educating people not to pollute from a young age.”
While many people appreciated this machine’s use, many people wondered if this mass-scale cleaning would mean that shells would also be picked up alongside plastic waste. Many small sea creatures like hermit crabs use abandoned shells for their protection. Echoing this concern, an Instagram user wrote, “And what about all the shells? 😐”.
