THE TRADITION of sustainable development started during the past eleven years, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah said on Tuesday.

Shah was speaking at the 15th convocation ceremony of the Charotar University of Science and Technology (CHARUSAT)  in Changa, Anand district.

“The country has achieved several goals in the past ten years. In 2014, this country was at number eleven among the economies of the world. Today, the country’s economy is at number four in the world and will soon become the third largest economy in the world. Immense opportunities have been created for youths. As much as 50 per cent of the digital transactions in the world take place from India. In 2014, less than 500 villages in this country had digital connectivity. Today, the task of providing connectivity to 1.50 lakh villages within the country has been achieved. India has become the third largest mobile manufacturing country in the world. We have reached the third position in the world in the automobile sector and the first position in the world in the milk sector. The tradition of sustainable development has started in the past eleven years,” he said.

This 25-year period from 75 years to 100 years of Independence is the era of immortality and fulfillment of India’s resolve, Shah added.

He said, ““Education without character is useless” these lines by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel should be a motto in everyone’s life. Knowledge or education alone cannot benefit a person, society or country. Knowledge and character, when combined, are useful for both the individual and the society. Sardar Saheb had said that a degree should not be just for the growth of the school. It is the job of the university to discipline young students, build character and make them aware of their responsibility towards society.”

“Higher education institutions were 51,000 from independence till 2014. In just 10 years 78,000 higher education institutions have been built, universities were 790 while 1,319 new ones have been created and 53,000 new colleges from 38498. Medical colleges have increased from 387 to 818 and the number of MBBS seats has increased from 51,000 to 1.29 lakh and the number of postgraduate seats has increased from 31,000 to 82,000,” Shah added.

As many as 2,129 students graduated and 45 students received gold medals, 38 were awarded doctorate degrees during the ceremony on Tuesday.
