With the PU elections over and done with, here8217;s getting to know the winning lineup

There8217;s something about winning that gets straight to the head. Specially when it comes so unexpectedly. Having won the Panjab University Campus Students8217; Council PUCSC elections on September 12, the winning SOPU-ABVP team suddenly seems to be 8220;busy8221;. Busy enough to not answer phone calls, leave alone meeting anyone. But nevertheless, after about over five hours of trying, we caught up with the foursome for a closer interaction. Here8217;s getting to know them better, why they are in politics, a bit about their past and the path they wish to trot in the future.

Mr President:Living by the authority of designation, he takes liberties on day one. He comes late by one hour and hops out of a car for his introduction. 8220;I am a fourth-year student of UIET,8221; Sahil Nanda beams, happy about the win. One that came as a surprise even to him. 8220;I was due to contest for the post of general secretary but the last minute rejection of Varinder Dhillon saw me standing for the post of the president instead,8221; he tells us. A resident of Delhi, 8220;the love that I have received from the city is tremendous,8221; he says stating that this is the second time he has stood for elections. Having schooled from Delhi Public School, he feels Panjab University has proved very lucky for him. 8220;My father, who is a Human Resource person in a government department and my mother, who is with the Central Electricity Authority supported me no ends,8221; he recalls the moment when he told his parents about his decision to enter politics. He has also been a part of the sports committee of the department. 8220;I want to complete my MBA from a reputed institute and become an Investment Banker,8221; he asserts.

Women Power:Contesting in a male dominated area, Parul Chaudhary at 5 feet 3 inches stands tall. 8220;The post of Vice-President is the only one that sees girls contesting in most elections but yet to be able to speak at the open house is a bit tough,8221; agrees this second year MA Political Science student, who says that her participation in speeches at school and college levels came in handy. Hailing from Saharanpur, Parul did her schooling from Yamuna Nagar. 8220;Coming to GCG-11 for BA gave me a lot of exposure,8221; she says for that8217;s where she 8220;fell in love with politics8221; and started knowing people from different parties. 8220;I started getting involved with election campaigns and other activities but never thought that I would get a chance to stand in PU elections,8221; Parul says her friends recommended her name and after that there was no looking back. Her father, a BJP supporter was more than happy with her decision. A versatile personality with a good academic record, it8217;s a career in civil service or full-time politics in the future for this young lady.

Politician in the making:He8217;s surely an all-rounder. For not only has he been an active participant in NCC and the Rotract Club but has won a silver medal in NSS and has been the chief proctor of his hostel in DAV College apart from being ABVP8217;s campus president. 8220;I have been with the party for about six years now,8221; says Prashant Sharma, the elected general secretary and a final year law student. He8217;s a resident of District Rewari, Haryana, and an alumnus of Vivekanand Senior Secondary School which his father runs while his mother is a physical education teacher. 8220;She motivated me and taught me team spirit. That8217;s the reason I want to be a politician and nothing else,8221; he asserts.

Legally bound:A student of University Institute of Legal Studies, Deepak Thakur, the elected joint secretary of PUCSC, has his fundas clear. 8220;I want to practice in the District courts and simultaneously prepare for the civils,8221; he says that student politics happened just by chance. 8220;Former president of SOPU Harpreet Multani is my friend and he believes that I can do something for the students,8221; he states his reason for contesting. He has also been the Department Representative and an active sportsperson. 8220;Since my schooling in Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19 I wanted to do something that would in turn raise the bar for quality education in society. This was my chance,8221; Deepak says, he is always following his fathers ideologies, who8217;s Attorney General, Punjab, 8220;To follow the law and that8217;s what I am going to fight for in PU,8221; he signs off.
