Bindra sets world mark

NEW DELHI: Teenage shooter Abhinav Bindra set a new World record in the air rifle junior men’s event in the selection trials at the Sports Authority of India, Bangalore.

Abhinav shot 594 out of possible 600, bettering the existing World record by a point, according to a National Rifle Association of India release here today.

The existing world record of 593/600 in this event is being held by Bulgaria’s Stojan Stamenov and Denmark’s Rasmus Lund.

12 Indians in fray

CHENNAI: A dozen Indian paddlers, including seven women, will participate in the Asian Junior Table Tennis Championship here from Aug 31-Sept 5.

Subhajit Saha, Shubham Chowdhary, Ranbir Das, Sukantu Das and National sub-junior champion Sourav Chakraborty among men and Poulomi Ghatak, Mouma Das, Sushmita Roy, Mallika Parekh, Vishaka Vijay, Ashwini and Rajuta Rege will form the Indian girls’ challenge in the championship.

Bula puts off swim

LONDON: Bad weather on Thursday forced Bula Chowdhury(23) to postpone her two-way swim of the English Channel yesterday till atleast Sunday.

The Channel Swimming Association, pilot boat and the coast guards do not allow two-way swim unless there is atleast 24-hour good weather. Bula, who had successfully crossed the English Channel from Dover to France a decade ago, is practicing daily for one to two hours for the two-way swim under the expert guidance of Fred Hammond, technical adviser on the beach. It will take at least 26 hours to cover the 52 miles swim both ways.

JALANDAR: The District Badminton Association has devised a scheme for payment of monthly cash scholarships for badminton players of various categories who have achieved excellence in the game at the National and state level.

The scheme for payment of monthly cash scholarships to players achieving first two positions in the state or National Championship’ involved an annual expenditure of over Rs four lakhs.
