The Sampigehalli police in Bengaluru’s North-East Division cracked a house burglary case in just 24 hours, arresting a woman who disguised herself as a man and used a fake number plate on her scooter to avoid detection.
The complainant, Sangameshwar, 42, a resident of Agrahara Layout, Yelahanka, told the police that he and his wife had left home after dropping their children at school on Tuesday. When he returned around 5.30 pm, he found the front door broken and valuables missing, including 30 grams of gold, 60 grams of silver, and Rs 15,000 in cash.
A case was registered under Section 331(1) (lurking house-trespass or house-breaking), and Section 305 (theft) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was immediately formed. Acting on leads, the police arrested the main accused, Reshma, 45, from Amarajyothi Layout on January 14.
During interrogation, Reshma reportedly admitted to committing the theft. The police said she disguised herself as a man to avoid suspicion. Investigators also found that she had used a scooter with a fake number plate, which had been repainted to further mislead authorities and make it harder to trace.
In addition to the vehicle, officers recovered a significant portion of the stolen property, including 217 grams of gold and 80 grams of silver ornaments, along with an iron rod used to force open the house lock.
The police described her planning and preparations as deliberate, aimed at evading detection and misleading investigators. “The accused had taken several steps to hide her identity and alter vehicle details to escape notice, but our team acted promptly and managed to crack the case within 24 hours,” a police officer said.
The officer added, “The accused also trained a juvenile in theft and disguised her as a boy by making her wear helmets and caps to evade suspicion and CCTV surveillance.”
Reshma, the police said, has a history of similar crimes, with cases registered against her at Hebbal, Adugodi, Bommanahalli, Nelamangala, Jalahalli, Kothanur, and RMC Yard police stations. Investigations are ongoing to trace the remaining stolen property, the police added.
