(AP Photo/Evgeniy Maloletka) Don Bacon, the Republican Congressman from Nebraska, has termed US President Donald Trump’s threat to invade Greenland if Denmark refuses to sell the island as ‘’utter buffoonery.”
Bacon said Trump’s Greenland obsession is “the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.”
He told the Omaha World-Herald that a US invasion of the Arctic island is a “disastrous idea” that could lead to Trump’s impeachment.

“There are so many Republicans mad about this,” Bacon said. “If he went through with the threats, I think it would be the end of his presidency.”
When asked if he would support a Trump impeachment over Greenland invasion, Bacon said, “I would lean that way.”
Earlier this week, Bacon was one of the five Republicans who joined House Democrats to introduce legislation seeking to preemptively block President Trump from using military force to acquire Greenland.
The No Funds for NATO Invasion Act, introduced Monday, would prohibit the use of federal funds for an invasion of any NATO member state or NATO-protected territory.
Trump has repeatedly insisted that the US has to have control of Greenland for national security reasons and has refused to rule out an invasion of the island, which is an autonomous region of the Kingdom of Denmark.

While some Republicans are onboard with the idea of the US buying Greenland, the military invasion of a NATO ally is not something that many support.
Republican Senator Thom Tillis said there will be enough bipartisan support in Congress to block an invasion of Greenland.
Recent opinion polls in the US also showed that around 85 per cent of Americans oppose using military force to invade Greenland.
