Prime Minister Manmohan Singh never looked better than he did at the G8 Summit in Toyako, Japan, last week. He was confident and smiling when he left at 5 am by road on a two-hour drive to reach the G8 venue on July 9, optimistic about his first meeting for the day—with George W Bush. The US President, on the other hand, was slightly behind schedule and Singh bumped into Bush in the corridor itself. Bush was struggling to fix the G8 pin on his coat lapel and it is learnt that Singh walked up to the American and helped him pin the button. That marked the start to a defining meeting signalling the last lap of the Indo-US nuclear deal.
