Guillermo Canas defeated Agustin Calleri 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 at the Madrid Masters Wednesday, advancing to a match-up with Roger Federer in the third round. Canas 8212; who beat the top-ranked Federer in consecutive tournaments earlier this year 8212; had three breaks in the final set, including in the final game.

Fifth-seeded Fernando Gonzalez saved seven set points in the first to win a tough contest against Spain8217;s Nicolas Almagro 7-6 11, 7-5, while Ivo Karlovic hit 20 aces in defeating Spain8217;s Oscar Hernandez 7-5, 6-2.

Karlovic has hit 1,172 aces this season, second only to Goran Ivanisevic8217;s record of 1,477 aces in 1996. Hernandez replaced Nikolay Davydenko after the fourth-seeded Russian pulled out with an elbow injury on Tuesday. Also, wild card Feliciano Lopez defeated David Ferrer 7-6 3, 7-5 in an all-Spanish matchup, David Nalbandian rallied to beat ninth-seeded Tomas Berdych 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 2, and Juan Carlos Ferrero upset 14th-seeded Carlos Moya 7-6 2, 6-4.

Earlier, Federer kick-started the concluding phase of his season, winning his 39th straight match over an American with a 7-6 2, 6-4 defeat of Robby Ginepri. The Swiss tennis supremo turned in a calm, reassuring performance six weeks after last playing on the ATP when he won a fourth straight US Open crown. Federer is in fine-tuning mode with this week and two more events remaining in his season before he and seven other rivals head to Shanghai for the season-ending Masters Cup starting November 11.
