Suniel Shetty on why ‘the younger generation needs to work in an office environment’

"This may not be a very popular opinion, but I need to put this out there," he wrote, adding that he has noticed "an increasing number of young kids entering the workforce, who favour opportunities that allow remote working"

The Covid-19 pandemic significantly altered the way we work. With the rapid spread of the virus restricting millions of people to the confines of their homes, remote working emerged as a solution to keep the ball rolling. However, with the pandemic gradually ebbing away, an increasing number of companies are asking employees to return to offices and shun remote working, in favour of a hybrid or complete work-from-office setup. However, not many are embracing this idea with open arms. Addressing the same, actor Suniel Shetty took to LinkedIn to express his opinions on this commonly-debated topic.

“This may not be a very popular opinion, but I need to put this out there,” he started out writing, adding that he has noticed “an increasing number of young kids entering the workforce, who favour opportunities that allow remote working“.

Shetty said that while working from home was great in many ways until the pandemic lasted, the invaluable experiences and growth opportunities that come from being physically present in a real-world work environment can’t be ignored. “As someone who owes his growth to having learned from people I looked up to, having built real relationships at work, and absorbing so much from a culture of creativity, here’s why I think the younger generation needs to work in an office environment,” he wrote, sharing his reasons.

Learning curve

According to the actor, working with a team and experienced professionals gives you access to learning that virtual interactions won’t replicate. “The opportunity to observe, learn from and engage with seasoned pros will accelerate your growth and success,” he wrote, sharing that working with director Priyadarshan was a milestone in his career as he spent time observing him at work and chatting with him. It “was a game-changer for me”, he wrote.

Real relationships

Another pro of working from office, according to Shetty, is the chance to interact with people from diverse backgrounds, seeing things from other perspectives, and learning to deal with disagreements. “I built a great bond with the likes of Salman (Khan) and Ajay (Devgn) through common interests. We don’t work together as much anymore, yet the bond remains. I can’t imagine having built relationships like these, if I knew them through a screen or met them twice a year,” the 61-year-old wrote, adding that you need to build bonds, even if you feel like you don’t need to, as these relationships will see you through the times.

Dealing with pressure

Work, as we know, can come with immense pressure. Shetty mentioned that it is working from the office that will give you the taste of this real pressure as remote working can’t capture it fully. “It is in this real environment that you’ll learn to deal with stress, see how big decisions are made and adapt to changing circumstances. Without this conditioning, you’re unlikely to learn much about resilience and the will to survive,” he wrote, adding that directors like Rohit Shetty or technicians like Sabu Cyril wouldn’t have achieved what they have if they spent their early years attending planning and pre production meetings remotely.

Concluding, the actor highlighted that while remote work is convenient and offers balance, it’s important to realise that the benefits of working from the office outweigh these conveniences, especially for youngsters. “The richness of physical interactions, the joy of sharing experiences and the transformative powers of learning from others will benefit you more than some of the things you’ll miss out because you’re not #WFH,” he wrote.
