Skincare: The many benefits (and some side-effects) of glutathione

Being a potent antioxidant, it aids in neutralising the free radicals formulated due to intense exposure to ultraviolet radiations and environmental pollutants.

It is extremely easy to get confused in the world of skincare — so many products, and an equal number of tips, tricks, and regimes. However, we are not here to confuse you further, but instead to inform you about an underrated skincare ingredient that plays a critical role in nourishing our skin. Known as glutathione, this potent ingredient is often part of a wide range of skincare products including creams, lotions, gels, serums, face washes, and even dietary supplements.

Talking about his wonder ingredient, Ankita Ghoshal Bisht, dietician in charge, Primus Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi, Chanakyapuri told indianexpress.com that glutathione is produced naturally by the body and plays a critical role in cellular function, acting as an antioxidant and detoxifier. “Glutathione helps to protect cells from damage caused by free radicals, heavy metals, and other harmful substances. It also plays a key role in immune function, DNA synthesis, and protein synthesis,” she added.

Talking about the same in an Instagram post, Dr Aanchal Panth, a dermatologist wrote, “Glutathione is an antioxidant made of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. It protects cells from oxidative stress and damage,” adding that glutathione converts eumelanin to pheomelanin and also inhibits the enzyme tyrosinase to reduce the production of melanin.

Here are some benefits of glutathione for skin, as shared by Bisht.

Antioxidant properties

Being a potent antioxidant, it aids in neutralising the free radicals formulated due to intense exposure to ultraviolet radiations and environmental pollutants.

Treats pigmentation

Glutathione is renowned for its depigmenting properties. By inhibiting the tyrosinase activity, it promotes skin brightening and evens skin tone. It also converts eumelanin to pheomelanin, thus regulating melanogenesis (process of producing melanin) and fading dark spots and reducing hyperpigmentation.

Promotes skin elasticity

It has been shown to amp up the collagen and elastin reserves in the body. This helps to give firmness and plumpness to the skin. It also improves appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and smoothens the skin.

Anti-inflammatory content

Glutathione exhibits anti-inflammatory properties and thus reduces the levels of pro-inflammatory mediators. This, in turn, helps in reducing acne, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and melasma.

Are there any known side effects?

According to Bisht, “Glutathione supplements are generally considered safe when taken as directed. However, some individuals may experience mild side effects such as stomach upset or allergic reactions. They may also interact with certain medications, and long-term use of high doses may lead to a decrease in natural glutathione production. As with any supplement, it is important to consult with a healthcare professional before taking glutathione supplements.”

Concluding, she noted that people who have asthma, allergy to glutathione, or are undergoing chemotherapy should avoid glutathione supplements. Additionally, pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid taking glutathione supplements as there is not enough evidence to prove its safety in this population. Individuals with certain medical conditions such as liver disease, kidney disease, and autoimmune diseases should also consult with their healthcare provider before taking glutathione supplements.
