Defending largescale unopposed wins in the local body polls in 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday slammed the Opposition for its alleged double standards. “When there is an unopposed election during Congress tenure, it is democracy. But when there are unopposed elections during BJP tenure, there is a threat to democracy. This shows the opposition’s double standards,” he said.
Addressing a poll rally at Dhule on Tuesday, the chief minister slammed the opposition parties for raising a hue and cry over the victory of 68 unopposed candidates in the local body polls. “Tujhko mirchi lagi toh main kya karoon (If you feel the sting/burn/hurt what can I do),” he asked.
Out of 68 unopposed candidates, BJP leads in 44 across the state in the municipal corporation polls. In the first phase polls for municipal council and nagar panchayats, BJP won 100 seats unopposed, setting the trend of largescale unopposed victories in the three-tier local body polls.
The elections for 29 municipal corporations including BMC will take place on January 15.
The opposition parties including Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (SP) and MNS have alleged that BJP and its alliance partner Shiv Sena had misused power and intimidated candidates to withdraw from the contest to facilitate unopposed victory in 68 places in the state.
Rubbishing opposition charges, Fadnavis said, “The problem is opposition is unwilling to reconcile to the BJP’s popularity among people. They cannot digest our victory and acceptance among masses.” According to Fadnavis, “At least 35 Lok Sabha MPs have got elected unopposed so far, of which 33 were elected during Congress rule.”
