Soha Ali Khan recently shared that her husband, Kunal Kemmu, had turned vegan for a year. In her YouTube podcast, she said, “I remember Kunal was vegan for a year and then he switched. Maybe it’s one of those things that are not sustainable,” she told dancer Malaika Arora and nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar.

Malaika also shared that she was vegan for around 2.5 years.

Why do people find it difficult to stay vegan for long?

Veganism means completely avoiding all animal-derived foods. This includes not just meat, fish, and eggs but also dairy, honey, and any hidden animal ingredients. “The diet is entirely plant-based and relies on fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds. People often choose it for health, ethical, or environmental reasons,” said Dt Amreen Sheikh, chief dietitian, KIMS Hospitals, Thane.

What happens when someone follows veganism for a year?

A well-planned vegan diet can bring many benefits. Sheikh said that people often notice improved digestion, increased energy levels, and sometimes weight loss. “Since it is high in fibre and antioxidants, it supports heart health, lowers cholesterol, and can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Many also report clearer skin due to less intake of processed and high-fat animal products,” said Sheikh.

What are the nutritional benefits?

* Heart-friendly: Lower saturated fat intake.
* Rich in antioxidants: Protects against cell damage.
* Weight management: High-fibre foods help control appetite.
* Gut health: Plant foods nourish healthy gut bacteria.

But are there any concerns?

Yes. Going vegan without planning can lead to deficiencies in vitamin B12, vitamin D, calcium, iron, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids —nutrients typically found in animal foods, according to Sheikh. “Some people may experience fatigue, hair loss, or weakened immunity if these gaps aren’t addressed. Supplements or fortified foods often become necessary,” added Sheikh.

Is veganism sustainable for everyone?

Not always. “Sustainability depends on access to diverse plant foods and the individual’s health needs. For example, children, pregnant women, athletes, and older adults may need extra care to meet their protein and micronutrient needs. It’s not about whether veganism is good or bad but rather whether it’s balanced and practical for the individual,” said Sheikh.

Who should consider veganism?

Anyone motivated by health, ethics, or the environment can try it, as long as they are willing to plan their meals, monitor nutrients, and consult a dietitian when needed.

“A year of going vegan can bring health benefits, but it’s not a shortcut diet. It requires awareness, balance, and commitment to be truly sustainable,” said Sheikh.
