(AKP via AP)Thailand-Cambodia Conflict Today News Live Updates: Thailand on Monday said that it launched airstrikes into Cambodia as fighting broke out between the two countries along the disputed border as both sides accused each other of breaking a ceasefire signed in October, brokered by US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim which halted the conflict. At least one Thai soldier has died and three Cambodian civilians have been injured in the recent strikes, Reuters reported. The longstanding border dispute erupted into a five days of war in July that killed 48 people and over 300,000 were temporarily displaced.
Fighting follows exchange of fire: The ceasefire was threatened in November when Thai army personnel were injured by landmines and the Thailand administration announced it was “indefinitely suspending” the implementation of the peace agreement signed with Cambodia in Kuala Lumpur in October. Both sides have been accusing each other of breaking the ceasefire. Trump has said last month that he intervened to preserve the ceasefire as tensions simmered between Thailand and Cambodia.
Centuries of rivalry behind territorial dispute: Beneath the territorial dispute between Thailand and Cambodia lies a century of rivalry when both the countries were warring empires, AP reported. The current territorial claims by both the nations are based largely on a map drawn in 1907 when Cambodia was under the French colonial rule, which Thailand has argued to be inaccurate. In 1962, the International Court of Justice awarded sovereignty to Cambodia over an area which included 1,000-year-old Preah Vihear temple.
Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet on Monday urged Thailand to refrain from the use of military force and resolve border issues through peaceful mechanisms.
“If Thailand truly loves peace and values its land as Cambodia does, then the Thai government and military should adhere to peaceful settlement of border issues, using agreed mechanisms and currently being implemented by both sides,” Samdech Thipadei said in a social media post.
Royal Thai Army Chief of Staff Gen Chaiyapruek Duangprapat on Monday said the army had set a target of neutralising Cambodia’s military capability so that the country would not pose a threat for many years.
“The objective of the army is to cripple Cambodia’s military capability for a long time to come, for the safety of our children and grandchildren,” Chaiyapruek was quoted as saying by local media outlet The Nation.
The Ministry of National Defence of the Kingdom of Cambodia on Monday said Thai forces continued their attacks into Monday evening. According to the Defence Ministry, Cambodian forces and civilians in multiple locations across Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey, Banteay Meanchey, and Battambang provinces were attacked using heavy weaponry, including drones, F-16 fighter jets, tanks, and other armaments.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has reportedly nullified the peace declaration signed with Cambodia in October. According to Bangkok-based Khaosod English, PM Charnvirakul said his country is ending negotiations and nullifying the peace declaration signed with Cambodia in October.
Japan on Monday issued a statement expressing deep concern over the tensions between Cambodia and Thailand. Japan urged both countries to observe the ceasefire agreement, exercise maximum restraint and seek a peaceful resolution through dialogue. The statement also said that Japan will continue to make efforts, in coordination with relevant countries, including the United States and Malaysia, the ASEAN Chair, to promote de-escalation of the situation.
Cambodia’s Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts on Monday said the Thai gunfire has caused damage to the Preah Vihear temple and conservation areas, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
According to the ministry, the recent attacks are “clearly intended to incite confrontation and undermine the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement,” which was signed between Cambodia and Thailand on October 26, 2025, on the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Military action against Cambodia will continue until Thailand's sovereignty and territorial integrity are secured, Thailand's foreign ministry said on Monday.
Thai Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura said Cambodia had "trampled" on a ceasefire agreement between the two countries.
Surveillance video shared by the Banteay Meanchey Provincial Administration in Cambodia showed Thai tanks and paramilitary forces crossing the barbed wire at the border and entering Prey Chan village in Banteay Meanchey province.
According to Thai Air Force Cambodia had mobilised heavy weaponry, repositioned combat units, and prepared fire-support elements—activities that could escalate military operations and pose a threat to the Thai border area.
“All missions were planned and executed in accordance with security protocols and relevant international laws, with the highest priority placed on preventing harm to civilians,” the Thai Air Force said in a statement.
The Thai army said that more than 50,000 people have left areas near the border for shelters, while Cambodia’s Information Minister Neth Pheaktra said that residents of several villages near the border have been evacuated.

“Thailand has never wished for violence. I'd like to reiterate that Thailand has never initiated a fight or an invasion, but will never tolerate a violation of its sovereignty,” Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said in a televised speech.
Four Cambodian civilians have been killed and nine others injured after fighting erupted at the border with Thailand on Monday, Cambodia's information minister Neth Pheaktra said in a Facebook post.
