Supermodel Alicia Kaur loves Indian hospitality. But despite the country offering many mouth-watering food options, she is happy to have more “beautiful, natural fruits” for breakfast and lunch. The Australian-born, who was in the news for her chemistry with actor Sidharth Malhotra during a fashion show, spoke about her struggle with Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) and how it motivated her to make lifestyle and diet changes.

“I am very much into health. I have PCOD. I was having operations to remove cysts and fighting to take care. The doctors kept giving me medicines. They weren’t helping. It was making my health worse. I lived with it for almost four years, and it was crippling. I was struggling with my weight, my moods, falling into depression, skin was terrible…I was like, I can’t model like this. I was also getting rejections from agencies. So, I decided to take matters into my own hands. We, as humans, need energy. Where do we get our energy from? Beautiful, healthy, fresh fruits, water, sunlight and exercise. All these natural resources,”  Kaur said.

So, the Mumbai-based model “made an active effort to change my diet instantly.”

“I started eating more natural fruits. I went on to whole fruit, plant-based vegan. That was the challenge. I loved having ice cream, pizzas, and cheeses. I tried to eliminate packaged, processed foods and not eating take-outs. It took a while. I come from a sports background. So, I naturally don’t indulge as much. But something wasn’t working. My body and mind were not feeling before I adopted this practice,” Kaur told ANI.

She said she ate fruits for breakfast and lunch. “I drank a lot of water. I love watermelon. I would eat the whole fruit. Making those changes changed everything for me. If I am eating healthy and eating natural fruits, my body tells me when it’s full. Initially, I was quite hungry. I would constantly have snacks on me like nuts and fruits. The key to anything in life is discipline. I am not starving myself. No way whatsoever. I am making sure that the few I am putting into my stomach are full of life and energy,” added Kaur.

Why do fruits form an integral part of a vegan diet?

Dr Rohini Patil, MBBS and nutritionist, founder of Nutracy Lifestyle, said that fruits are packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that contribute to overall health and well-being. “The vitamins and antioxidants in fruits help strengthen the immune system, reducing the likelihood of illnesses. They are also a rich source of dietary fibre, promoting digestive health, preventing constipation, and helping in weight management,” said Dr Patil.

Is natural sugar or fructose a concern?

Fruits contain natural sugars, providing a healthier alternative to processed sugars found in many other foods, said Dr Patil. “The natural sugars in fruits provide a quick energy boost, making them a healthy snack choice for sustained energy throughout the day,” she added.

She further noted that fruits often have high water content, aiding hydration and skin health. “Regular consumption of fruits is associated with a lower risk of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, certain cancers, and age-related eye conditions,” said Dr Patil.

Most fruits are relatively low in calories, making them a nutritious and satisfying option for those aiming to maintain or lose weight.

Different fruits offer a variety of nutrients, encouraging a diverse and balanced diet. Dr Patil mentioned that including various fruits in the diet adds flavours and textures, making meals more enjoyable and increasing overall nutrient intake.

For optimum health, experts advise consuming a range of fruits in moderation.
