NIRF 2025: These are the top engineering institutes

NIRF 2025 Ranking Engineering: The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 rankings for engineering institutions were announced on September 4 by the Ministry of Education in New Delhi. Continuing its winning streak, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has retained its number one position in the engineering category for the 10th consecutive year in NIRF 2025, followed by IIT-Delhi and IIT-Bombay, respectively.

IIT-Madras has also attained top rank the overall category along with the newly introduced Sustainable Development Goals category.

IIT Hyderabad claimed the seventh spot, ahead of IIT Guwahati at eighth. NIT Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) is the only NIT to feature in the top 10 this year, ranked ninth, while IIT (BHU) Varanasi rounded off the list at tenth position.

The rankings highlight the continued dominance of the IITs in technical education, with NIT Trichy standing out as the only non-IIT institution to break into the elite list.

Launched in 2015, NIRF evaluates higher education institutions across categories such as engineering, management, medical, law, universities, and overall performance. They have also introduced state and open universities categories last year.

Rankings are based on parameters including teaching, learning, and resources; research and professional practice; graduation outcomes; outreach and inclusivity; and perception. In the engineering category, weightage is given to research output, employability, and international collaborations.

In the universities category, IISc Bengaluru secured the first rank, while Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) took the second spot. The Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) and Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) were placed third and fourth, respectively.

Among colleges, Hindu College, University of Delhi, emerged as the top-ranked institution, followed by Miranda House and Hansraj College in second and third place. Kirori Mal College secured the fourth position, while St. Stephen’s College was placed fifth.

In the research institutions category, IISc Bengaluru was ranked first, with IIT Madras at second place. Meanwhile, in the open universities category, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) topped the list, followed by Karnataka State Open University, Mysuru.
