A resident of a housing society in Bengaluru has caused a stir on social media after alleging that he and his flatmate were fined Rs 5,000 because “girls stayed overnight” at their apartment. The viral Reddit post shows a screenshot of the invoice, where he asked whether he should take legal action against the society.

In his post, the resident said the society enforces a rule that prohibits bachelors from having overnight guests, while families face no such restrictions. “Basically, our society has a rule that bachelors are not allowed to have guests overnight, but no restriction for family. We pay the same maintenance and everything,” he wrote.

The invoice, dated November 1, states that the two were fined Rs 5,000 for allowing women to stay the night. It even includes the date of the alleged violation and the number of visitors. “Two girls stayed overnight,” the comment on the invoice reads, noting the incident occurred on October 31.

The post has since gone viral, triggering a backlash against the housing society. “These visitor management apps that are enforced on apartment dwellers are just a way to invade the privacy of the residents. Even if they reduce the time taken to check people in and out of the buildings, they come at a huge personal cost,” a user wrote.

“Read the agreement beforehand carefully, lads, and never rent a place with such shitty rules. OP move out of that “society” asap. Lmao 5k for an overnight stay, you could’ve stayed in a pretty good hotel in that money with dinner included! That’s just straight up extortion,” another user commented.

“I am here wondering that who will keep an eye on flats where only bachelors stay to catch them if someone stays there overnight!!” a third user reacted.
