Chennai weather today LIVE Updates: Chennai and several northern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu are bracing for another wet day.  After days of persistent rain that flooded neighbourhoods and slowed traffic, conditions remain unstable, prompting fresh warnings for both the city and its neighbouring districts.

Orange alert issued for 4 districts: An Orange Alert is in place till 10 am today, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting moderate rain with thunderstorm and lightning at isolated places over four districts: Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram. and Chengalpattu. The weather department has flagged the possibility of waterlogging, slippery roads and traffic delays through the morning.

Yellow alert in several districts: A Yellow Alert has been issued for light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning over Villupuram, Cuddalore, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Pudukottai, among others. These areas are likely to see isolated rainfall activity as the wet spell continues across Tamil Nadu.

Waterlogging and traffic disruptions: IMD advisory predicts waterlogging in some areas, slippery stretches, and traffic disruptions as key impacts. The conditions are to remain unsettled across northern coastal districts, where persistent rain over the past few days has already flooded several neighbourhoods.

Rainy, cloudy week ahead in Puducherry

Puducherry is set for a mostly cloudy and rainy week, with chances of light to moderate rain and isolated thunderstorms from Dec 5–9.

Day temperatures will stay stable at 29°C, while nights remain humid with minimums around 23–24°C.

Kodaikanal Records 8.5°C, Lowest in Tamil Nadu’s Hills

Kodaikanal recorded a minimum temperature of 8.5°C, the lowest in the hilly region over the past 24 hours ending 8.30 am on December 5, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai.

In the plains, Dharmapuri registered the lowest minimum temperature at 21°C.

Yellow alert for heavy rain in Tenkasi and Tirunelveli ghats: IMD

The Regional Meteorological Centre has placed the ghat areas of Tenkasi and Tirunelveli under a yellow alert for heavy rainfall on December 5, the IMD’s latest warning map shows.


Both regions fall under the “watch” category, while the rest of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal remain without any warning for the day.


As per the IMD scale, heavy rainfall corresponds to 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm.

In a fresh weather forecast, the IMD has warned of heavy rain over Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Tiruvannamalai, Villuppuram, Nilgiris, Ghat areas of Coimbatore, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Tenkasi districts in Tamil Nadu as well as over Puducherry.
