IIM Sambalpur and IIM Raipur had last year exited from the Common Admission Process (CAP), the centralised system used by third-generation IIMs to shortlist and interview candidates for their MBA/PGP programmes. Last year, as many as 10 institutes—Jammu, Bodhgaya, Kashipur, Raipur, Ranchi, Sambalpur, Sirmaur, Trichy, Nagpur, and Udaipur—had participated in CAP. However, with both IIM Sambalpur and IIM Raipur opting out this year, the consortium has seen a notable shift.
The decision is rooted in the institutions’ intent to focus on a specific profile of students. IIM Raipur, in particular, believes that the CAP framework does not align with its vision of attracting candidates who fit its motto of “building business owners,” prompting the institute to pursue an independent admission process. There is an increase in women's enrollment in most IIMs. Last year, the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK) inducted 586 students into its full-time postgraduate programmes for the academic years 2025–2027. The institute recorded a gender diversity of 51% women across the three MBA programmes. Read more
Once the CAT result is out, the race for top B school will begin. Most candidates keep the package as one of the top reasons while choosing an institute. Over the years, the management department of IITs has shown great results - both in ranking and placement. However, when it comes to management, they are far behind the top IIMs. Prof Rajat Agarwal, Head of Department of Management Studies, IIT-Roorkee, told the indianexpress.com that the difference in compensation packages between IITs and IIMs can be attributed to several structural and market-driven factors.
“IIMs primarily cater to roles in consulting, investment banking, and private equity — domains known for offering high salaries due to their revenue-driven nature. On the other hand, IITs have a strong presence in analytics, technology management, and operations, which, while offering lucrative careers, do not command the same pay scales as finance-heavy roles. Moreover, the top IIMs have a well-established legacy and a strong alumni presence in CXO roles globally, which helps in attracting premium job offers. IITs, while making rapid strides, are still in a relatively earlier phase of this transition,” he said, adding the IIMs have highly curated batches selected through CAT, often attracting professionals with prior experience. Days before he resigned as Director of Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Raipur, citing concerns over “administrative autonomy and operational integrity”, the Ministry of Education informed Ram Kumar Kakani that he was bound to “follow and implement the decisions” of the institute’s Board of Governors, according to documents reviewed by The Indian Express.
The Ministry’s communication sent on July 11 — ten days before Kakani’s resignation — effectively sided with the Board in a running dispute over who held executive authority at the institute under the IIM Act, 2017.
The Indian Express first reported, on October 8, that Kakani quit on July 21, two years before the end of his tenure, over differences with the Chairperson of the Board of Governors.
The Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK) has announced the commencement of admissions for the academic year 2026–27 to its two flagship doctoral (PhD) pathways — the 20th Batch of the Doctoral Programme in Management (DPM) and the 8th Batch of the Doctoral Programme in Management (Practice Track).
Admissions to both programmes follow a rigorous three-stage selection process, consisting of eligibility screening, a Written Ability Test and Doctoral Orientation Conversation, and a final Doctoral Area Conversation conducted by expert faculty panels.
Of the total 2.95 lakh candidates registering for the MBA entrance test, around 2.58 lakh candidates appeared for the exam.
In order to ensure fairness and equity in the comparison of the performances of candidates across different test sessions, the scores of candidates will be subjected to a process of normalisation. The normalisation process will adjust for location and scale differences of score distributions across different forms. After normalisation across different forms, the scores will be further normalised across different sections. The scaled scores obtained by this process will be converted into percentiles for purposes of shortlisting, read a statement on the website.

CAT 2025 Slot 3 Exam Analysis: Difficulty level and section-wise review
The final slot of CAT 2025 concluded at 6:30 pm, marking the end of this year’s three-session exam conducted by IIM Kozhikode. According to Career Launcher’s Gautam Puri, student reactions indicated that Slot 3 was moderate to difficult, closely aligned with the overall difficulty of CAT 2024 but marginally tougher in parts. Candidates noted that while VARC remained accessible, DILR posed steady challenges and QA emerged as the most demanding section of the day.
Slot 3 followed the same structure as the earlier sessions, with 68 questions across three sections to be attempted in 120 minutes. Initial estimates highlight that smart question selection was essential, particularly in QA, where difficulty escalated compared to the morning and afternoon sessions.
According to T.I.M.E., the overall structure of Slot 2 of CAT 2025 on 30 November remained identical to last year, with 68 questions spread across three sections and no changes in pattern or sequencing.
CareerLauncher also described the slot as moderately challenging but comparatively more approachable than Slot 1, particularly because DILR offered a better spread of solvable sets.
CATKing noted that several of their predicted themes appeared in this slot, including a ChatGPT-based passage and another centred around animals.
IIM-K will close the objection window will open on December 8 at 12 pm and will close on December 10 at 11.55 pm
Initial student reactions from test centres suggest that the CAT 2025 Slot 1 paper that was “manageable but slightly more difficult” than last year’s Slot 1. This year’s test comprises 66 questions across Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Ability (QA).
An MBA is awarded by universities and therefore follows the University Grants Commission (UGC) curriculum. The structure offers academic credibility and consistency, making it a strong choice for those eyeing careers in research, teaching, or government roles. The trade-off is that updates to the curriculum may take longer, given the regulatory framework.
A PGDM, on the other hand, is typically offered by autonomous institutions. This autonomy allows greater flexibility in keeping the curriculum aligned with industry trends. Many PGDM programmes emphasise case studies, live projects, and practitioner-led courses, enabling students to engage with real-world business challenges from day one. For aspirants keen to enter the corporate sector with applied skills, this hands-on orientation can be an advantage.
Despite concerns over global economic and political instability, applications to MBA and business master’s programmes worldwide grew by seven per cent in 2025, as per the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC)’s annual Application Trends Survey. The Council conducts graduate management exams like the GMAT and NMAT.
The GMAT is a global admissions test for MBA programmes, whereas the NMAT is a national-level test for MBA admissions in India.
According to the application-trends data, while Asian and select European institutions saw a dramatic rise in demand, major Western destinations like Canada and the United Kingdom struggled with steep declines in applicant numbers, largely due to tightening visa rules and uncertain labour markets.

The Common Admission Test (CAT) 2025 is a national-level entrance exam for admission into MBA and postgraduate management programmes at the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and other top B-schools in India
The Minister elaborated on how the application fees are used by the conducting IIM to successfully conduct the CAT exam. “The CAT application fee is decided every year to cover the administrative, logistical, and operational costs involved in conducting the exam in that year on a national scale,” he said, adding that the CAT fee is non-refundable as the logistics and arrangements for the CAT exam are planned based on the number of candidates who have submitted their application forms and paid the exam fees.
The fee of the Common Admission Test is used in organising venues, scheduling, and preparing the necessary resources for each candidate. If a candidate decides not to attend the exam after all these arrangements are made, the fees cannot be refunded, as it would not be feasible for the concerned IIM to reverse the extensive planning and resource allocation already completed.
For CAT 2025, the application fee is Rs 2,600 for General and OBC candidates, and Rs 1,300 for SC, ST, and PwBD applicants. In comparison, the fee in 2021 was Rs 2,200 for General/OBC and Rs 1,100 for SC, ST, and PwBD categories.
The application fees for the Common Admission Test (CAT) have risen by 31 per cent since 2021. On the opening day of the Winter Session of Parliament, Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi raised a question to the Ministry of Education regarding the steep hike in CAT application fees. Conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), the exam serves as a gateway for students aspiring to pursue MBA programmes. Also Read
