When you hear the words ‘gulaal’ and ‘TV show’ in the same sentence,don’t go about celebrating. For,this is most certainly not a television adaptation of Anurag Kashyap’s take on twisted Rajput politics. Star Plus’ new show,Gulaal,which starts today,is about a girl in Kutch,named — wait for it — Gulaal. She has the ability to sense the presence of water beneath the dreary desert sands of her village,Rashipur. Well,we have to give the creators points for using their imagination — at least it’s not another child bride or oppressed girl fighting the system. Or have we spoken too soon?

Need more proof that the channel executives at Colors read the news? You’ll find it in their new show Rishton Se Badi…Pratha. The name of the show,roughly translated,means: ‘Tradition supersedes relationships’ and talks about the barbaric practice of ‘honour killing’ that still plagues some parts of India. Talk about jumping onto the topical story bandwagon — Colors has surely nailed it with its many shows. And given most soaps’ tendency to unrealistically bring in dramatic elements like murder and kidnapping,the execs at Colors must be glad they got a story that actually demands these twists. Now if only they could somehow also manage those plastic surgeries and time-leaps.
