In A first,employees of the Parel railway workshop handed over a shunting engine to Central Railway on Friday. The engine was one of 43 shunting engines manufactured at Parel workshop. As many as 21 shunting engines were manufactured in the last one-and-a-half-years,all of which were sold to private parties.
On Friday,Central Railway General Manager Kul Bhushan inaugurated the engine. While appreciating the work of officials and staff of Parel workshop,the general manager announced a cash award of Rs 50,000.
The manufacturing of the yellow-coloured engine with green stripes was completed a week ago. In four years till September,2010,110 engines were manufactured at Parel workshop, of which 67 were diesel electric and 43 shunting engines.
Suneet Sharma,chief works manager,Parel workshop,said the engine had many specialities,For the first time,a microprocessor has been used in the shunting engine so that key parameters are displayed on the screen and recorded. If any engine stops working,all defects of the engine may be downloaded so that troubleshooting can be done easily.
This idea was conceptualised in July 2006. The employees at Parel workshop were trained in assembling broad gauge locos,various logistics like drawing of list of material required,transportation,storage,testing of locos etc.
The first loco was flagged off on December 12,2006.
